The United State Patent Office offers a host of information for the inventor and for trademark registration. www.uspto.gov/
Think you have a novel idea? Searching at the USPTO can find patents but they are hard to read. A good way to see if someone has published anything about your idea is a simple Google (R) Internet search.
Starting a Business:
The California Secretary of State offers advice for starting a business in California or anywhere. You will need to know this site anyway. http://www.ss.ca.gov/business/resources.htm
The city of San Diego also has useful information and links. You will likely need a business license if operating within the city. http://www.sandiego.gov/
The census bureau collects and maintains statistics on businesses in your area. Want to know how many competitors there are in your zip code or operating budgets for your industry? Go to: http://censtats.census.gov/
